Reflections on Piano Posture: Letting Sound Lead the Way
Posture is often treated as the very first step in piano learning. From an early age, we are taught to shape our hands properly and train our fingers in a certain way. Yet when we observe great pianists from different schools and traditions, their postures can appear surprisingly different. This naturally raises a question: were we taught the “wrong” way from the beginning? And perhaps more importantly, what does a “correct” piano posture actually mean?
Reflections on Piano Practice|The Flow
Have you ever noticed that when you’re completely absorbed in something, time seems to pass unusually fast? That sensation likely means you’ve entered a flow state.
The concept of flow was first introduced by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi in 1975 as part of positive psychology. In essence, when we are fully engaged in an activity, our consciousness takes the lead while the body operates almost automatically. Everything feels smooth and natural. During this state, we may even lose awareness of external distractions, such as hunger or fatigue, until the task is complete. Only then do we realize how much time has passed and feel a deep sense of satisfaction and joy.
Turning Notes into Music
At the intermediate or advanced level, students often realize that playing the piano isn’t just about hitting the right notes. Complex pieces and expressive challenges can feel overwhelming, and it’s common to feel frustrated or even tempted to give up. Yet this stage is a natural and essential part of musical growth. While each student faces unique challenges, it’s also the perfect opportunity to deepen musical understanding and develop a true sense of artistry.
